In this section I describe the most commonly used referencing systems in social science in the UK. Get down to writing earlier rather than later; you can always expand on what you_ve written by adding more source references as you go along. In this instance you need to print out a copy (although you_ll find your department is only too willing to pay, if you can prove you gave it in and it_s their fault it_s been mislaid). You have to come up with a method that suits the data you_ve been collecting. Using the moderately positivist and moderately relativist examples from the section _Working out whether you need to deal with theory_, and carrying out non-empirical research, you_re still going to come up with different interpretations depending on your philosophical stance. _ Write these notes somewhere quiet so that you can really focus. Sometimes you can get the information you need by taking notes from the opening and closing paragraphs of each chapter. Caffeine is probably the most common issue for many students, especially as it can be used to pull an all-nighter when a deadline looms. In Table 1-1 you can see a tiny sample of the kinds of social science questions you may meet but which are frequently presented in different forms. Go back to your previous courses and re-read your old essays. Chapter 8: Generating Your Own Empirical Data 155 Much like questionnaires (see the section _Constructing a questionnaire_ earlier in this chapter), interviews can generate both quantitative and qualitative data, depending on the nature of the questions being asked and the amount of detail the answers draw out. My colleague and I were both starting to question what we thought we knew, that Jean Piaget was Swiss _ the students couldn_t all be wrong could they? Had we simply been giving out the wrong information? We inspected our notes and they were fine. Amerongen Thesis 2025. Jot down your answers to the following questions in your dissertation notebook (yes _ new stationery!): _ What are your favourite TV programmes? _ What type of music do you like best? _ What sort of films do you enjoy watching? _ What kind of books do you read for entertainment? _ When spending time with friends, what do you like to talk about? _ What inspired you to go to university? _ Do you enjoy your own company? _ Have you a childhood interest that you_re still keeping up? _ What do you do with your free time? _ Which subjects on your course are you enjoying most? _ When chatting with other students about what they_re studying, which subjects sound appealing and interesting? _ What sort of impact do you think your career is going to make? From your answers, try looking for patterns in what you enjoy doing.

For example, the economic principles of cause and effect, which tries to explain how the economy is affecting people_s behaviour in areas such as businesses, families and relationships. Amerongen Thesis 2025. If you get no response after about a week, contact your supervisor again. A ratio is a way of expressing a comparison of different qualities, of showing how the qualities relate to one another. (You_ve no need to think that you_ve failed in any way. Talk to your supervisor and friends (both on your course and some taking different courses) about what area you should study to help avoid you hurtling off on the wrong path, wasting time and energy. Tutor: Oh, that sounds interesting. You need to match what you_ve collected with what you actually need. The most important thing is to understand how your computer works and to make the best use of it possible. Querying qualitative and quantitative data Quantitative data from questionnaires comes from the simpler questions usually found at the start of the questionnaire, designed to ease the respondent into the process of answering the questions that follow. Part IV: Writing and Polishing Your Work 216 Critiquing a particular theory Contextualise this theory within the current field; provide a rationale for evaluating the theory; explain (briefly) any methodologies you may utilise; show the importance of the theory through a review of the literature; describe the origins, nature and impact of the theory; critique the theory by referencing evidence, examining its validity, consistency and suppositions; compare the inferences made from the theory with those you can now make having identified fallacies in the theory; suggest improvements; conclude by summarising the key themes (without repeating everything). Something like: _Is there anything you_d like to add?_ is fine.

Using Analysis to Explore Ideas Whether your dissertation is empirical or non-empirical, you_re weighing up ideas and theories as your dissertation develops. Your course materials may also be able to help if you see a particular author being mentioned frequently. Here are some useful questions you can ask yourself about your reading that help you clarify the nature of the evidence and ideas: _ What is the viewpoint of this writer? Does it detract from his judgement? _ Is it okay to accept this fact? Would other people agree with this point? _ What evidence is this writer citing? How can the validity be assessed? _ Why should I give this author any credence? _ Is this writer using commonly accepted definitions? Your use of this writer should be affected by your answers to these key questions. Your university has support services: Contact them early. Having high standards is admirable, but aiming so high that everything must be absolutely perfect may result in you feeling like you can_t ever give anything in at all. Amerongen Thesis 2025. Your university probably publishes writing support materials that you can access for free.

Poor conclusions often appear pompous and delusional, always overblown and irri- tating, frequently unintentionally humorous and sometimes just plain silly. However, you need to be technically competent when filming and you may find yourself at the mercy of the equipment. To find where you stand on urban renewal ask yourself: _ Am I honestly bothered about street furniture? _ Do I care about community amenities? _ Do I want to investigate the idea of _special character_ or conservation areas? _ Am I worried about the design of public buildings? _ Would I like to know more about how urban projects are funded? _ Do I want to think about transport? _ Can I bear to be reading about the gentrification of areas? _ Do I feel the urge to find out more about compulsory pur- chase orders? _ Do I feel strongly about green spaces? With luck a picture of a possible research question comes into view. Amerongen Thesis 2025.

Conversely, you_ll notice any pages that contain predominantly short sentences and phrases, where there_s no flowing text. As I mention in the section _Looking at literature reviews_, reviewing the literature is a _research methods_ and you can explain something of your approach to this task as part of your methodology. A successful student is just one more feather in the cap for a supervisor.
